Reasons to stop smoking

The main most obvious reasons for stopping smoking are the health benefits. There are 7000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, including carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide. These chemicals are introduced into the body and blood stream, basically poisoning the body. 

Most people think about lung cancer when they think of the consequences of smoking, but there are many other health problems associated with smoking.

Conservative figures show that 1 in 2 smokers will die from smoking related diseases. Existing diseases are made much worse by smoking. In 2016-17 there was over 1,300 smoking-related admissions to hospital per day. Smokers see their GP 35% more than non-smokers. Also, the UK cost of smoking to society is £12.6 billion a year.

What other damage does smoking do? It increases bad cholesterol and decreases good cholesterol causing plaques to deposit on arteries contributing to angina and causing stroke and heart attack if the plaque breaks off or a clot forms around the plaque – nine out of ten heart bypass patients smoke. 

According to the Stroke Association those that smoke 20 cigarettes a day are six times more likely to have a stroke; this risk increases the more a person smokes and smoking also increases the risk of a brain haemorrhage by fifteen. When plaques form they cause arteries to become narrowed or blocked – which also increases blood pressure. It also causes artery walls to become inflamed which contributes to plaque formation. Smoking results in blood becoming ‘stickier’ making clot formation more probable, one of the causes of stroke and heart attack in addition to arterial plaques as noted above.

Other reasons

You will have more income and more time! If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day at £12 a pack (2019 figures) and you stop smoking now, you will save over £1,095 in the first three months – the price of a pretty good holiday. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day, you will gain 60hrs a month by stopping smoking.

By stopping smoking you will take control of your life and be better off, not just financially but your health will benefit too as well as those around you. For those that stop smoking – after ten years your risk of heart attack and stroke are the same as that of someone that has never smoked. So well worth the effort.
